A former Goole Amateur performer has been accepted to a clown school in France.
James Lewis-Knight is preparing to move abroad in October to attend a seven-month course at Ecole Philippe Gaulier in Etampes, an hour south from Paris. The 26-year-old who created his own company, ‘Clown Space’ after graduating from York St John’s University in Contemporary Theatre Practice, said the next step is “the most exciting and important” part of his journey as an artist so far. “I’ve just always loved physical theatre, comedy and connecting with an audience and being playful”, he said.
“Goole Amateurs is essentially where my passion for theatre began. “When I went to university, I stumbled across clowning in one of my modules and realised that it encompasses all of the things I love. “Since then, I’ve spent the time learning everything there is to know about the art form, going on retreats, teaching my own workshops and creating my own performances.” The course will cover modules in masked play, characters, Shakespeare and Chekhov and wrap with clowns.
James Lewis-Knight will be studying to become a clown at France’s Ecole Philippe Gaulier. (15-07-27 SU)
